Iran’s experimental electronic tradition has been getting more attention lately, thanks to artists like Sote, 9T Antiope, and Siavash Amini-along with pioneers like Dariush Dolat-Shahi, whose 1985 Smithsonian Folkways album Electronic Music, Tar and Sehtar was recently reissued. It’s as enveloping a mix as any I’ve heard recently-a real showstopper. The tracklisting spans three decades, several continents, and styles that range from house to electro to breakbeat, but you’d never guess it from how effortlessly all the puzzle pieces fit together.
The opening-nature sounds, suggestive bump and rustle, ominous dub-is like someone taking your hand and leading you down a dark corridor from there, it plunges headlong into tunneling techno and charcoal-smeared atmospheres. You might expect a party like that to foster a self-consciously eclectic vibe, yet this set from HIIY cofounder Adab is as focused as it gets.
From the beginning, the event series was envisioned as a place where hip-hop, house, R&B, and experimental electronic music could commingle, despite taking place at a venue best known for punk and garage rock. The mix plays out like a live-action game of exquisite corpse: a beautiful beast brimming with appendages, each one more fanciful than the last.
A spine-tingling mid-set blend of Errorsmith’s hiccupping “Lightspeed” with the dizzy piano-house keys of Champagne Circuits’ “Rave City Riverfront” exemplifies how intricate his blends can get. the success of the mix comes down to the fact that nothing has been done for yuks. An opening salvo pairing Squarepusher and Lil’ Flip neatly sums up Teki’s M.O. From the former category come songs from Brandy, Eurythmics, OutKast, and even (gulp) Swedish House Mafia representing the latter are artists like Hyperdub’s Proc Fiskal, “deconstructed trance” investigator Lorenzo Senni, and Baltimore club mainstay Rod Lee. On the third and final chapter in his “King of Blends” series, the French DJ Teki Latex once again crafts laser-focused fusions of pop hits and underground club beats.
